Shivaangee has been training in Bharatanatyam since the age of 8 under the tutelage of Shri Prakash Yadagudde, of the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan (UK). Over the past 16 years, she has taken the dance form with her wherever she has gone, including: Oxford, where she set up the University’s first Indian Classical Arts Society and subsequently taught, choreographed and performed at numerous venues, to Japan, where she conducted workshops and performed with exponents there, and finally to India, where she has been in full-time training for the past year under the acclaimed performer Rukmini Vijayakumar.

She continues her training in the UK at The Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, through which she hopes to transform the attitudes informing the modern practice of Bharatanatyam. This evening at the Nehru Centre, Shivaangee will showcase a full Bharatanatyam maargam (repertoire) that she has worked on over the past year. It is a rare opportunity to observe and understand the movement aesthetic that Bharatanatyam exponent Rukmini Vijayakumar is currently developing in India, to great intrigue; it combines a strong focus on physical alignment, an expressional vocabulary that is inspired by western theatre and a physical vocabulary grounded in the Natyashastra.
