Lakshmi Persaud was born in Trinidad. She studied at Queens University Belfast, where she received her Ph.D degree and Reading University where she obtained her Post Graduate Diploma in Education. Since the mid-1970’s, she has lived mainly in the UK where her five novels have been published. Her fourth novel, Raise the Lanterns High, (Arcadia) is also available in Italian: Tenete alte le lanterne ( 66 th and 2nd ) Butterfly in the Wind (Peepal Tree), her first novel, was published in 1990. Her work has been critically acclaimed in the Sunday Times, The Guardian, The Observer, Time Out and in the Indian and Caribbean media. Her other novels are: Sastra (Peepal Tree) For the Love of My Name (Peepal Tree) and to date Daughters of Empire (Peepal Tree) Daughters of Empire (Peepal Tree Press, 2012) is a sweeping family saga, across generations and continents, a moving portrayal of migration and the challenges it presents. This is unlike any other novel of the Asian experience in Britain.

According to Kenneth Ramchand, Professor of Literature, Daughters of Empire, set in England, is something new in the literature of migration and Rita Christian, a lecturer in Caribbean literature at the London Met University in her review of the book in the Trinidad Guardian described Lakshmi Persaud as one of the most exciting Indo-Caribbean women writers to have emerged in recent years.
