Prof Raychaudhuri’s memoir (Harper Collins-India) gives a wonderful account of the class of landlords of Bengal to which his family belonged. It narrates the traumatic events of India in the last decade of Raj and the building of a democracy as witnessed by the author. It also analyses life in Oxford today and fifty years ago, where Prof Raychaudhuri spent the longest spell of a distinguished academic career. The book, in the words of Prof Amartya Sen, ‘demonstrates that seriously enlightening history can also be great fun to read.’

Prof Tapan Raychaudhuri retired from his post of ad hominem chair at Oxford in 1993 as professor of Indian History & Civilisation. He is currently Emeritus Fellow at St Antony’s College, Oxford. The recipient of Padma Bhushan, Prof Raychaudhuri was made the National Research Professor by the Indian government in 2011.

Launch : Prof Amartya Sen, Nobel Laureate and the recipient of Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour awarded by the President of India, Prof Sen is currently the Thomas Lamont University Professor and Professor of Economics & Philosophy at Harvard University. He is also a senior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows and a distinguished Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford and a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.
