Introduced to Bharatanatyam at the age of four by Madhavi Chandrasekar in Trichy, Dr. Janaki Rangarajan trained under Dr Padma Subrahmanyam at Nrithyodaya (Chennai) for 16 years. During those years, she received rigorous training and performed extensively in India and abroad and performed in lead roles in many Nrithyodaya productions. Now an independent performer and choreographer based in Washington, DC and Chennai, Janaki has received several awards including the Vasanthalakshmi-Narasimhachari Award from Natyarangam, Sathya Nrithya Sundaram from Bharathanjali Trust, Singar Mani from Sur Singar Samsad, and the Strauss Fellowship for Choreography from Arts Council of Fairfax County (USA). Janaki recently received the coveted Nadanamamani award from Kartik Fine Arts and the NCA Excellence Award from Nungambakkam Cultural Academy Trust. She trains students in Bharatanatyam at her school, Nritya Niketan. Also trained in Carnatic vocal and Veena, she holds a PhD in Molecular Genetics from Miami University (USA). (
