Upahaar School of Dance was founded by ShaliniShivashankar with the simple desire to share the joy experienced from expressing and communicating through dance. It was started in Croydon in 2003 and now has branches in Sutton, Croydon, Twickenham and Crawley. Upahaar offers work-shops, lecture-demonstrations and regular training in Bharatanatyam, Kathak,Mohiniattam and Carnatic music. One of the core philosophies of Upahaar is that dance and music can be learnt and performed at any age.

On 13 June the Upahaar School of Dance presents NRITHYAANJALI, a presentation by the students and faculty of Upahaar School of Dance. It will be an Evening of Indian Classical Dance in three dance styles - Bharatanatyam, Mohiniattam and Kathak. The dancers will be in various age groups ranging from 10 year olds to teenagers and adults and they will perform to pre-recorded music. NRITHYAANJALI will consist of short pieces in Bharatanatyam, Thathari&Cholkettu in Mohiniattam- an invocatory dance praising Lord Ganesh; Natyanjali in Bharatanatyam- a piece in praise of Lord Ganesh, Saraswati, Vishnu, Shiva and the Gurus; Padams in Bharatanatyam- in praise of Lord Krishna& Lord Shiva; Kathak-Nritta or pure dance in Kathak and a Jugalbandhi Finale (Bharatanatyam&Kathak).
