This exhibition invites us on a journey across the North East region India, in the company of Dr Verrier Elwin. The journey captures a few images of some of the tribal cultures of Arunachal Pradesh; from the Monpas in the northwest to the Wancho of the east; we will also meet the Naga tribes, on the way on to Manipur.

The exhibition offers portraits, glimpses of timeless village life and Elwin’s affection for the tribal arts. The exhibition also captures a glimpse of Dr Elwin’s character: his perceptions, his opinions, his spiritual yearnings, his sheer love of the people that he studied and the physical endurance that was needed for him to visit these hidden, restricted areas to document these cultures during a most important period of postcolonial transition.

This small exhibition of photographs spans a period of his work during the late 1940s and 50s; in those days, the roads had yet to be built, and the tribes had never experienced the passion of the photographer before.
