Onam is the biggest and the most important festival of Kerala. According to legends Kerala was once ruled by a King called Mahabali (also called Maveli). It was the golden era of Kerala - everybody was happy, food was available in abundance.

When Maveli, ruled the land, All the people were equal. And people were joyful and merry; there was neither anxiety nor sickness, deaths of children were unheard of ,there were no lies, there was neither theft nor deception.

The most important activity on the Onam day is the grand feast.

Maveli’s fame as a noble king began to spread and even the gods felt challenged and began to fear of his growing powers. One of the Gods used his super powers to dispose him and pushed him underground. Maveli was granted a last wish, which was to return to Kerala, once a year to see his subjects. This is celebrated as Onam. Mahabali would like to see, all his subjects are still happy and life is same as before. Therefore, Kerala comes alive during the Onam season with Snake boat races, street dances, colourful flower arrangements in front of houses, fire works etc.
