Play: Maya Jaal
Subhaluxmi Mukherji

The play Maya-Jaal was conceived over cups of coffee and casual ‘catching up’ when two college mates, Subhaluxmi and Sujata met after years. By the end of the evening the stage was set – to revive their shared passion for theatre and create a creative oasis in their otherwise routine city lives. The script evolved spontaneously as they found the common threads in their understanding of relationships and judgements around it. The play tells the story of Maya and her contoured world of art, love and longing. Through the lives of Maya and her son Ri, it explores the theme of our layered existence - one that we live on the outside and the other that we grapple with within. To give the play a sense of timelessness, narratives from ancient texts and the epic novel ‘Jaal’ written by Sangeeta Bahadur, are woven into the story.

Subhaluxmi Mukherji and Sujata Setia are professionals currently based in London. Subhaluxmi works in the non-profit sector while Sujata is a manager at a business coaching firm. In India, they have worked with Directors from the National School of Drama and in various other amateur and professional productions. Maya-Jaal is their first production in London, and an endeavour to create a platform for like-minded theatre enthusiasts to work on contemporary Indian plays and experimental theatre.
