Padmashri Guru Pratap Pawar is the senior most Kathak exponent in the UK whose works range from classical Kathak to contemporary fusion; from solo performance to group dance drama. He is the very first disciple of Padmabhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj. With a well-grounded training in Kathak from one of India’s leading dance gurus and a versatile performance career Guru Pratap Pawar has emerged as a compelling, sensitive and a very innovative choreographer. He has a personal style that is unique, serene and characterised by an impeccable technique that blends precision in footwork with aesthetics and imagery (bhav).
He has trained over 700 students for more than 5 decades in the West Indies and in the UK. Guru Pratap Pawar has undertaken a lot of work in bringing together different cultures by blending Indian dance with Flamenco, Caribbean, Modern/contemporary dance for which he has received great acclaim worldwide.
Guru Pratap Pawar will be celebrating his 75th birthday at the Nehru Centre with a performance which marks the culmination of 60 years in the dance field of Kathak.
