Michael Wood is a highly respected author and TV presenter. Born and raised in Manchester and educated at Oriel College, Oxford, where he did post-graduate research in Anglo-Saxon history. A broadcaster and film-maker, Michael has over eighty documentary films to his name, most recently the critically acclaimed The Story of India.

In this landmark series, historian and acclaimed writer Michael Wood embarks on a dazzling and exciting expedition through today's India, looking to the present for clues to her past, and to the past for clues to her future. The journey takes the viewer through majestic landscapes and reveals some of the greatest monuments and artistic treasures on Earth. From Buddhism to Bollywood, from mathematics to outsourcing, Michael Wood discovers India's impact on history.

In this lecture Michael offers us an insight into his journey of more than a thousand miles, through the temples and holy shrines of Southern India and eexplores the art of the Chola dynasty

Renowned for their artistic and cultural achievements and inspired by their religious beliefs, the Chola dynasty of Southern India surpassed the art of casting bronzes from the tenth to the thirteenth centuries, and sent armies to Sri Lanka and the Ganges plain, trade missions and planting colonies across the Indian Ocean to Java, Bali and the Malacca Straits, some of which are still there today.
