Dance: Odissi

Odissi as a Language of Resilience
Get Direction

Under the artistic direction of Baisali Mohanty, the Centre for Peace and Performing Arts (CPPA) presents a compelling fusion of classical Odissi and contemporary dance. The production brings together tradition and innovation, using movement to explore themes of identity, resilience, and human expression.

“She Exists” (2024) is a contemporary work where Odissi evolves into a powerful narrative form. It portrays the journey of a woman discovering her voice and inner strength, expressed through evocative choreography and music. The piece reflects perseverance and self-expression through the language of dance.

Costume as Narrative: Sandhya Raman’s Design Language Costume design by Sandhya Raman plays a significant role in shaping the visual and emotional experience of the performance. Drawing from traditional motifs and contemporary aesthetics, the costumes enhance the storytelling, with layered textiles and fluid forms reflecting depth, identity, and artistic expression. The costumes become an integral extension of the choreography, enriching the overall narrative.

The event will also showcase traditional Odissi choreographies centred on themes of resilience, alongside She Exists, highlighting a seamless dialogue between classical and contemporary forms.
