This will be a presentation to mark the Centenary year (b.1918-2018) of the legendary exponent of Bharatanatyam, T.Balasaraswati, renowned as BALA all over the globe. Bala was venerated as an illustrious torch-bearer of the Thanjavur dance tradition in its pristine pure standards and excellence. Hailing from a traditional family of dancers and musician, Bala was greatly responsible in elevating the art of Bhartanatyam which belonged to the temple, through the proscenium stage, to reach wider audiences for higher aesthetic enjoyment. Bala’s exquisite handling and mastery of the rigorous pure dance and the intricately nuanced interpretive aspects gave her a unique place etched in gold in the annals of dance history. This presentation will feature a short film on Bala , designed by the speaker with available resource on the legend , followed by her talk and demonstration of the technique and approach of Bala’s style.

Nandini Ramani , a multi-faceted Bharatanatyam exponent and a senior most disciple of Bala propagates two illustrious legacies-one of her own father , the internationally acclaimed Sanskrit scholar and Indologist Dr.V. Raghavan and the other of her revered teacher T.Balasaraswati. Trained by eminent musicians in vocal Carnatic music, Nandini has been in the Bharatanatyam field, and has been serving the cause of fine arts in the past five decades and more as the Managing Trustee of the Dr.V.Raghavan Centre For performing Arts. Guided into the realms of Sanskrit language and Theatre by her father at his organisation Samskrita Ranga, Nandini continues the work as its Secretary, and acts, produces / directs authentic Sanskrit plays for stage.

She has been a Former Resident Dance Correspondent of The Hindu for 15 years, a former Secretary of The Music Academy, Madras, and Exe. Board member-Central Sanget Natak Akademi, Expert Member for -Committes of the Min. of Culture, Central Dance Audition Board, and presently General Council Member ,ICCR. A recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar (2012), Nandini has been bestowed with several well-known awards from leading cultural organisations.
