Dance: Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi and semi-classical dance
Raga & Rhythm is a celebration of Indian classical and semi-classical dance, presented by Suchismita Ganguly Dance Company. The evening moves from darkness towards light, and from individual movement to collective celebration. Opening with a dynamic fusion of Bharatanatyam and Kathak, it brings Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi and semi-classical dance together on a single stage. What makes it unusual is who performs it: young students share the stage with adult dancers, professional artists and choreographer-performer Suchismita Ganguly herself, closing with a powerful ensemble finale. At its heart it is a celebration of connection between generations, tradition and the present, artist and audience.
Trained under Guru Thankamani Kutty in India, Suchismita Ganguly has danced professionally for over twenty years. Since her 1996 Arangetram she has performed at the Konark, Uday Shankar, Puri Beach and Dover Lane festivals, and across the UK, Germany and the United States. Her expertise is storytelling through combined dance and theatrical technique, which has led her to conceptualise and choreograph several dance theatre works and dance films. Seasonal Hues was produced as a film, premiering at the Phoenix Cinema, London, and later adapted for the stage. Her work has been reviewed in UK magazine Pulse.
