The classical Manipuri dance, originating from Manipur in Northeastern India, showcases the region’s rich cultural heritage. Renowned for its graceful and refined performance art, Manipuri dance includes various traditional forms and is central to the Meitei community, the primary inhabitants of the Manipur valley.

Gita Govinda is a 12th-century Sanskrit work by poet Jayadev depicts the divine love story of Radha and Krishna. Originally choreographed by the late Guru Bipin Singh in 1978, Gita Govinda was revived and re-staged by his disciple, Dr. Sohini Ray, in 2008 in Los Angeles. The presentation will include this celebrated work, along with other pieces choreographed by Guru Bipin Singh, such as Dashavatar and additional Manipuri dance pieces.

Dr. Sohini Ray, a distinguished Manipuri dance master, was recognized as a child prodigy by Guru Bipin Singh and has since achieved a notable career. Her early accomplishments include performances with the Jhaveri sisters and receiving the National Cultural Talent Scholarship from the Government of India. She has been honored with the 'Shringar Mani' award, the “Los Angeles Treasurers Award,” and the Devdasi National Award in 2013. As the founder of Manipuri Dance Visions in Los Angeles, Dr. Ray continues to contribute significantly to the global dance community through her roles as a performer, director, choreographer, and scholar.
