Prabhakar Kolte was born at Nerur Par in Maharashtra. He completed his diploma in painting from the Sir J. J. School of Art in 1968. He spent twenty-two years teaching at his alma mater and retired in 1994. Some of his solo exhibitions are, Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2002, 1997, Muller and Plate, Munich, 2001, Admit One Gallery, New York, 1998, Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi, 1997, Gallery Chemould, Mumbai, 1993, 90, 87 and 83. Some of the group exhibitions where his works were shown are, Art Musings, Mumbai, 2005, CIMA, Kolkata, 2005, Saffronart & the Pundole art gallery, New York, 2001, Gallery Espace, New Delhi, 1996, Contemporary Artists from SAARC Countries Kolkata, 1992, Seventeen Indian Painters: Celebrating Gallery Chemould`s 25 years, Mumbai, 1987, Six Indian Painters in Titograd in, Turkey, 1985, and Contemporary Art in Maharashtra, Mumbai, 1975.

Kolte now devotes his time to painting and lives in Mumbai.

He has had a total of 84 group exhibitions and 27 solo.
