Penny Smith was born in Sri Lanka and spent her childhood in Kolkata, India - it was India that inspired Penny's use of colour in her paintings and gave her the idea of applying gold leaf to her work to create life and light. Penny considers India as her second home. Her mother was a member of the Academy of Art in Kolkata and a great artist.

Penny studied art in Cornwall and then at the Central School of Art in London. She has exhibited in Cornwall (Italy) and London (UK). Penny works with oils (these are applied with fine layers) on linen canvas and also egg tempera. She sometimes uses 22 carat gold leaf, this brings an evocative shimmer to her work and to give her paintings another depth she uses handmade Indian paper that she purchases from Jaipur. Her style of painting is a mix of contemporary with a hint of realism.

Penny worked with Om Puri on “East is East “. She has also worked in India on feature films with Akshaye Khanna, Aamir Khan and Anil Kapoor and; has painted characters who have worked on these films.
