The scion of the oldest and illustrious family of sarod players, Lucknow Shahjahanpur Gharana, Irfan Mohammed Khan is a well-known Sarod player and scholar and historian of Hindustani music. He is often referred to as the Khalifa of his gharana by his friends and admirers. He was vigorously tutored in the traditional style by his father, Ustad Umar Khan, a famous sarod player and scholar and his uncle Ustad Ilyas Khan, the legendary sitar player from Lucknow.

He has Performed and conducted workshops widely in India, Europe, USA and neighbouring countries. He has also participated in seminars conducted by Sangeet Research Academy at Mumbai and Kings College, London. He has also performed at the Sarod Festival, under the auspices of the Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Memorial Society.

He has acquired Sangeeth Visharad (B. Music from Bhatkhande Music College, won gold medal as the topper in M. Music from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, University of Music, Allahabad.

The title of Sur-Mani by Sur Singar Samsad of Mumbai , Seva Sree Award by Dakshin Kalikata Krira o Sanskriti Parishad have been conferred upon him.
